Joint Replacement / Arthroplasty
Medical term: Arthroplasty
Recovery: 6-12 weeks
Overview
Joint replacement, or arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged joint surface is replaced with an artificial implant made of metal, ceramic, or plastic components. In the context of orthopedic trauma, joint replacement is most commonly performed for displaced hip fractures in older adults and for fractures that have destroyed the joint surface beyond the possibility of reconstruction.
Our San Diego orthopedic trauma surgeons perform both partial and total joint replacements for the hip, knee, and shoulder. We evaluate each patient individually to determine whether fracture repair or joint replacement will provide the best long-term functional outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is joint replacement needed after a fracture?
Joint replacement may be recommended when a fracture severely damages the joint surface beyond repair, or when a fracture occurs in a joint already affected by arthritis. Hip fractures in older adults are commonly treated with partial or total hip replacement.
How long does a joint replacement last?
Modern joint replacements typically last 15-25 years or more, depending on activity level, implant type, and individual factors.
