About Our Practice

Navy-trained orthopedic and trauma surgeons bringing military precision and discipline to civilian orthopedic care in San Diego.

Our Story

San Diego Orthopedic Trauma Specialist — previously known as Bongio Orthopedics — was founded by Navy-trained orthopedic and trauma surgeons who spent years treating service members in some of the most demanding medical environments in the world. From shipboard surgical suites to combat support hospitals, our surgeons developed the skills, composure, and precision that only military medicine can teach. When it was time to bring that expertise home, they chose San Diego to build a practice rooted in the same values that guided their service: duty, integrity, and putting the patient first.

Today, our practice combines that military-grade training with the latest advances in orthopedic and trauma care. We treat everything from weekend sports injuries to complex fractures, and we bring the same level of focus and urgency to every patient who walks through our doors. Whether you need help recovering from a broken wrist or are facing a more serious orthopedic challenge, you will be treated by surgeons who have seen it all and know how to get you back on your feet.

Our Philosophy

We believe surgery should be a last resort, not a first recommendation. Our practice is built on a non-surgical first philosophy: we exhaust every conservative treatment option before considering an operation. Casting, bracing, physical therapy, injections, and lifestyle modifications are always explored first because in many cases, they work.

No Financial Incentive to Operate

Here is something most practices will not tell you: our primary work is hospital-based trauma contracts. That means the majority of our revenue comes from treating emergencies at local hospitals, not from elective surgeries booked in our clinic. We have no financial incentive to recommend surgery when it is not needed. When we tell you that you need an operation, you can trust that it is truly necessary. And when we tell you that you do not, you can trust that too.

Military Heritage

Our surgeons served as U.S. Navy orthopedic and trauma surgeons, providing critical care to active-duty service members, veterans, and their families. That experience instilled a discipline and team-based approach to medicine that defines how we practice today. In the military, there is no room for ego or guesswork. Every decision is deliberate, every protocol is followed, and every member of the team has a role. We bring that same structure, accountability, and sense of mission to your care.
