Scapula Fracture
Medical term: Scapular Fracture
Overview
A scapula fracture is a break in the shoulder blade, one of the most well-protected bones in the body due to the thick muscles surrounding it. These fractures are uncommon and typically result from high-energy injuries such as motor vehicle collisions, falls from height, or direct high-impact trauma. Because significant force is required to fracture the scapula, associated injuries to the ribs, lungs, or nearby nerves and blood vessels are carefully evaluated.
At our San Diego practice, we use advanced imaging including CT scans to fully characterize scapula fractures and determine the optimal treatment approach. The majority of these fractures are treated non-surgically with immobilization and a progressive rehabilitation program. When the fracture extends into the shoulder joint or causes significant displacement, surgical fixation may be recommended to restore normal shoulder anatomy and function.
