Foot Fractures

Medical term: Metatarsal and Phalanx Fractures

Overview

Foot fractures encompass breaks in the metatarsal bones, phalanges (toes), and other small bones of the foot. These injuries are extremely common and can result from direct trauma, twisting injuries, overuse (stress fractures), or falls. While many foot fractures are straightforward and heal well with conservative treatment, some patterns — particularly those involving joint surfaces or significant displacement — may require surgical intervention.

Our San Diego orthopedic practice provides expert evaluation and treatment for all types of foot fractures. We prioritize non-surgical management when appropriate, using protective footwear, casting, or buddy taping to support healing, and reserve surgery for cases where it will meaningfully improve the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I walk on a broken foot?
It depends on which bone is broken and the severity. Some stable fractures allow limited weight-bearing with a protective boot, while others require a period of non-weight-bearing. Your surgeon will advise you based on your specific injury.
