Clavicle Fracture
Medical term: Clavicular Fracture
Overview
A clavicle fracture, commonly called a broken collarbone, is one of the most frequently seen upper-extremity injuries. The clavicle connects the shoulder blade to the breastbone, and it can break from a direct blow, a fall onto an outstretched hand, or a high-energy impact during sports or motor vehicle accidents. Fractures most often occur in the middle third of the bone, where it is thinnest.
At our San Diego orthopedic practice, we evaluate each clavicle fracture individually to determine whether non-surgical management with a sling and rehabilitation or surgical fixation with a plate and screws will provide the best long-term outcome. Most patients achieve excellent healing and a full return to their previous level of activity.
